HOW TO ACHIEVE YOUR SMART GOALS

So many people are getting out and about more in the Sutherland Shire or simply spending more time at home during COVID-19. Now is a great time to start thinking about goal setting for the rest of the year and ways to help best achieve these goals.

Let’s take a look at setting goals. How are we setting goals? Are we creating SMART goals? What does this even mean? SMART is an acronym and below we discuss further what each component means:

Specific:

Your goal needs to be specific, as simple as that. The more specific your goal is, the greater the chance you will achieve it. Having broad goals can sometimes mean we get lost in what we are trying to achieve. This is component is very important and can help us work out how we can achieve our desired goals. We need to also think about why you want to achieve a specific goal.

Measurable:

How do we know if we have achieved something? How can we measure our success? You need to make sure that your goal can be measured so that you can reflect and identify how much you have achieved.

Achievable:

Is the goal you have set for yourself attainable? The goal you are trying to reach should motivate you, however if we are setting goals that are too far out of our reach, there is a good chance you will not be motivated to attain it. Aim high but let’s make the goal realistic!

Relevant:

Is this goal important to you? How does this goal impact your life? If the goal isn’t relevant to you and your life, there is a good chance you can lose motivation.

Time Frame:

Times frames are a big one when setting goals. If there are no timeframes for when you wish to achieve a goal, it can ultimately fail. You need to set yourself a time for when you believe you can achieve your goal, and again, you need to be realistic! There may be one large goal that you have allocated a longer time period for, and that is fine! But what other smaller goals will help you achieve the larger goal first? Plan these too!

Let’s put these components into practice for 2020 so we can successfully say “new year, new me!” Let’s break the old habits and create new and healthy ones.
